Why the Blue Mountains are special

A world-heritage wilderness of blue-hazed sandstone cliffs and deep eucalyptus valleys, barely an hour from central Sydney — that combination is rare anywhere. The Three Sisters, the Jamison Valley and Scenic World deliver huge scenery for very little effort, which is why it's Sydney's most popular day trip.

The practicalities of the day

It's an easy trip — about an hour or two each way — so tours run as comfortable full days. You can self-drive or take the train to Katoomba, but a guided day trip removes the logistics and times the lookouts and Scenic World well, usually finishing with a river cruise back into the city.

Go guided for a first visit

For a first visit, a guided tour is the easiest way to see the highlights: it bundles the lookouts, Scenic World, often a wildlife park and a cruise, and takes the driving off your hands. Small-group options give you more time at each stop and less standing around.

Come prepared, and pick by inclusions

Dress for cooler, changeable mountain weather and sturdy walking. Then choose your tour by what it includes — Scenic World, wildlife, a bushwalk, a cruise — rather than by price alone. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in a date now and adjust later.
